Hi all

Remember if you update drivers, especially ATI, use something like driver sweeper to make sure all the old files and settings are deleted, as these may cause stuttering and not use HW acceleration properly.
And also for the dual amd cpu's see if cool'n'quiet being switched off in the BIOS changes things, if all else fails.

I use PowerDVD8 h.264 Decoder Filter which supports DXVA2.0, but you have to use Vista´s EVR to activate DXVA. XP+NET3.0 doesn´t do the job. I used to have XP+CoreAVC and PowerDVD8, but now I´ve established a pretty perfeft Vista x64 with MediaPortal, ZoomPlayer as external DirectShow Player, PowerDVD´s Codecs and EVR. My onboard Geforce 8200 (Asus M3N78 EMH / HDMI) does all the Video Decoding (h.264/VC-1/MPEG-2) and the CPU (AMD 4850e) runs at 3-7% on both cores at Alien Vs. Predator 2 >1080p@60 with 2xDTS-Core< ;-)

That´s the way hardware acc is supposed to be. Also picture quality is way better on interlaced clips than CoreAVC, because that´s a software decoder. The mGPU´s decoder is much smoother and sharper. ffdshow sucks because no DXVA and has no multi-core-support.

Installed Media Portal RC2 with the latest nightly build
Hardware acceleration enabled in Power DVD AND Media portal
(someone seriously needs to write a guide regarding hardware offloading. This is totally confusing and non-intuitive.)

Would not play at all until I installed the watchamagigy for subtitles.
Now it will play, but performance is worse than it was under XP without acceleration.
Media portal itself is noticeably slower.

I can watch smalled MKV files... if its under 2gig it seems to play ok. But the big files... 4+ gigs (the ones that look nice) don't play well at all. Lots of lag and stuttering. I've even got a 10gig one that basically just crashes MP on launch.

Any other ideas? Should I try an external player? I've been spending 6hrs+ a day trying to get this to work and am starting to get annoyed.

Hi,
There are potentially lots of problems with mkv files and hardware acceleration. Basically it all comes down to how the mkv file has been encoded. The hardware decoders may not support all the possible ways of encoding things (so in effect an mkv may not be a "standard" h264 stream), there are many many very long threads on this on various internet sites... The bottom line is that you may have problems getting hardware acceleration of some mkv files....
