Hello all,

New guy here, I am preparing to switch my Mythtv box to Mediaportal, to try it out.
I have both XP sp3 and 7 pro that I could use, is there any particular advantage to go with 7?
Im leaning toward just using xp just to keep the footprint smaller, maybe a bit leaner.

The machine I will use is a 2.8ghz AMD box with 2gb of ram and a 256mb nvidia 7300gs card.
not the most powerful machine but It runs Myth fine.
I have a PVR-250 and I am connecting via firewire to my STB, a SA 3250HD ( I had to use a profile for a 4250, or something close to make it work under Myth)

Ive used Myth since about 03 and havent really tried anything else, I figure I may as well see what else is our there - Im exited to give MP a run, It seems to be pretty flexible, and has plenty of add-ons - and it Open Source!

Thanks for any input

You just asked a theological question. There are priests from both sides that will convince you that XP or 7 is the only way to go...

I would try 7 first, as it has potential for better quality and is more modern in all. If you have issues with that you can always try XP. In 7 you may use just the included Win7 Codecs (just install Hali Splitter and nothing else) and be up and running as far from Codec Hell as possible. As most devs of MP use 7 by now, it is probably the best way to go (esp. MP 2 will not support XP anymore).

I would go for Win7 as well. Your PC will be too slow for any HD movies or HDTV, but should hopefully run SD ok. I would recommend you install SAF5 (which includes haali mkv splitter) rather than just hali splitter alone. I would also install StreamedMP skin as it automatically installs the most popular plugins. Another good skin to try is monochrome or maya, both these might be easier on your cpu.
