You will get different change times depending in channel

    Dvbs expect 2-3 sec
    Dvbs2 (most HD) 5-6 sec

There is a experimental branch which reduces the dvbs2 times in the GitHub.

Dvbs2 is longer due to the tbs driver checking dvbs first, the new branch allows mepo to tell the driver if it is dvb if dvbs2

Mdapi shouldn't be slowing it down, ms here

You need to compile/merge it your self as there are none ready.

It's the tuner hardware branch on git

Do you use custom data grabber branch?

    Hi Porky,

I have been on the forums and have been recommended TBS.

I was thinking of getting the Quad DVB-S2 and Twin DVB-T2.

Firstly, do you find that you use all the tuners? I originally thought that my having six tuners would be overkill but then started to think about the fact that if add, say, 2 minutes of padding to the beginning and end of each recording, there is the real potential for lots of clashes, especially around prime-time - one of the main reasons that I need more than just the three tuners I currently have.

Also, am I right in thinking that you only view freesat and freeview? I was considering using one of the Sat Tuners with a Diseqc Motor to see what other channels are out there on the other satellites.

    Thanks

    Alex

    Hi Alex,

I find that the GF seems to use all the tuners. The reason I got the two quad cards was because she seemed to watch and record a lot of +1 channels and the current set up now prevents any clashes. Also, there are three clients running off the server, and again, the GF has an inability to turn off clients and only have the one running in the room which she is currently sat in. I think we have had 7 channels active at one time, which was 2 clients watching live TV and the rest recording.

I only use Freeview and Freesat, although I have in the past scanned for other satellites. A good pal of mine fits motorised satellite dishes and in all the time he has been doing it he said he has never come across much else worth watching if English is your only language. I did ask this question a couple of years back on this forum and got very few, if any, responses.

Don't forget that all of the Freeview HD channels are on the same mux, so you can have many simultaneous/overlapping recordings across the four HD channels with just the one DVB-T2 tuner (with a single-seat system at least).

    Hi Porky,

I think one of my main motiviations for a Diseqc Motors is that I am a constant tinker (as I think most people on this forum are) and I am always looking for little projects to add to my HTPC.

I did have a mess around with a few other satellites years back and do remember that there was the odd English language channel (though as you say, very few) on there and even if I get only one, it would probably be worth it, considering that the motors are only about £50.00.

Technically, I should be able to watch some of the German channels as I studied it as part of my degree but it is amazing how little I actually understand - a bit like a non-native English speaker trying to watch Eastenders, I suppose.

Anyway, do you think the TBS satellites cards are a good option, even if I consider to get a Diseqc motor at a later date?

    According to this:

    http://www.tbsdtv.com/products/tbs6984-dvb-s2-quad-tuner-pcie-card.html

    It supports, "DiSEqC2.X and Motor".

I'm sure there will be channels showing stuff where you won't need to speak the language ;)

    Hi Alex,

I do like TBS. They seem to respond to their customers queries very well via the TBS forum. They also seem to have active discussions with MP Devs too. The reason I went with TBS is that I had a DVB-S/S2 card from a couple of years back and it was faultless, so I just stuck with what I was familiar with.

The TBS 6984 has now been superceded by the TBS6985 The only improvement I can see is that the newer card also supports 16APSK & 32APSK demodulation, whereas the 6984 is only 8PSK QPSK - this is beyond my knowledge but could provide for better future proofing.

Myself and a couple of other users have had a small issue recently where the cards have had to be 'preloaded' in the TV Server tuner settings, otherwise live TV would freeze when another tuner was activated. Since ticking the preload box all has been OK.

Have you reread this thread on using the 6984 with Diseqc >>here<<

    @jonm Nice one ;) (y)
