I can understand that a "what I am currently working on" list might be difficult to maintain, and it's hard to force people to keep it up to date when they would rather be coding. However, it might be nice to have:

1. A list of the major ongoing projects, and who the primary contact is. This would give people someone to PM and ask if they would be duplicating work if they think up a great new (or maybe not new (this is what we would try to prevent)) feature.

2. A list of partly finished or unstarted (but worthy) projects that people could take on if they wanted to try coding but didn't have a great idea of their own.

This might require a person to maintain the lists, as it is usually impossible to get everyone to do it themselves. If anyone else thinks that this is a worthwhile idea... or if you think that this is already handled well enough... or it is already being done somewhere...

Oh, and I'll volunteer if you need a list maintainer, you just have to wait till the second week of September, when my "summer of going to out-of-town weddings every weekend" comes to an end.
