Hello, I’m looking to setting up a satellite setup but I have some questions. I am living in the Netherlands, by the way.
1. What exactly do I need for a satellite setup? My list as I came up to it is like this: a dish, coax-cables, LNB’s to capture the signal, a DiSeQSC (or something) switch and a smartcard offered by Canal Digitaal.
2. At the moment I still have a standard package with TV and radio from my local cable provider (UPC), but I assume that goes away when I decide to purchase a satellite setup? In that case, what exactly will I lose and have to purchase for myself.
3. I’ve got five TV’s through the house who’s coax-cables all lead to the central closet. Can I simply leave these cables and use them for the satellite setup too?
4. I am also planning to use this setup for an HTPC. I already selected a DVB-S2 TV-card (Hauppauge WinTV NOVA-HD) and a CAM-Module (Alphacrypt 1.07), so I can access coded channels. This is all possible, I assume? I don’t need a subscription with channels from Canal Digitaal when I decide to do it this way, right?
5. I actually want to be able to receive all standard channels and, if possible, also every HD channel. To make that possible, the dish has to be specially directed for that, right? If so, how exactly is that done then?
6. Does Mediaportal’s TV-server also simply work with satellite setups (DVB-S(2))? Since I read something somewhere about that the channels had to be in the same range or something to properly work in TV-server, so it can record multiple channels with only one tuner. But what exactly is this all about?
7. At the moment I have a subscription with my cable provider which provides standard TV and radio. This subscription will probably be ended when I get a satellite setup. At the moment I have a receiver at home which has this radio signal linked to it. Now I was wondering if satellite can also provide radio signals, so this is not another problem?
8. What exactly are LNB’s, and what are they used for? And what exactly is the purpose of multiple LNB’s?
9. I am currently using digital TV from my cable provider too. This provider provides some foreign channels like The History Channel, 13th Street and Zone Reality, and also provides subtitles with those who seem to be external. Now, I don’t know if this is provided by my cable provider itself or that it is provided by ‘my cable provider’s provider’ P). Do I have these probably external subtitles with satellite too?
10. When I decide to use a DVB-S2 tuner together with a CAM-module to receive and decode all channels I don’t need a subscription at Canal Digitaal, right? Since I think I will just be receiving all channels through the dish, and the ones out of those that are coded can be decoded by the CAM-module, while the others are just simply accessible? Or am I thinking about this the wrong way?
11. Is a satellite also able to provide an EPG (Electronic Program Guide)?
I know it's a lot, but I'm such a newbie at this at the moment and I hope most questions can be answered.
Great thanks in advance.
