We would all like to have a completely silent HTPC ofcourse...
The way to be completely quiet is to use passive cooling.

The only disadvantage is you need big heatsinks and this means a big case.

But, I found myself a nice case and I hope to receive it in 2 months:

    It's the mCubed hfx Case:

    It's got complete passive cooling,
VFD display + imon remote optional
    looks cool (matter of opinion)

Yes, I like the look of it too!

With heatpipes and fanless PSU the prise .... is a bit high ... I think anyway.

Please note it's weight, so you don't trash the 4mm glass where the VHS use to be standing (a while back) :)

I have just read about the case in the new issue of german chip magazine.

And I aim for a complete fanless system, like you.
My wife thinks the msi is too noisy :(, my tolerance is somewhat higher, but basically she is right ;)

Only, I won´t sell my msi mega but replace my desktop with it.

I think the new system will have:

a amd 64 cpu with Cool & quiet
    a decent passive graphics card
a case with a lcd or touchscreen

    must be game compatible.

Had a look at the dign x15e too, but it is really expensive...

Gonna get you on irc one or the other day on this ;)...

It looks kind of big. For those of you (us) who have built on this, how does it fit in your living room? It looks like a full ATX box with cooling fins. Does that work in a rack?

I guess my real question is what is the WAF for this box? It's quiet but how much is that offset by how huge it is? Recent pointers that have got me exciited have been the silverstone lc11 and the ahanix mce301/302. This box seems to have the quiet factor but not the living room sexiness that it needs.

    Any opinions?

I want small (m-atx and m-itx) and quiet (which all passive cooling defintely has) but I also want unobtrusive (e.g., people think it is a DVD player at most). I don't want a big giant box sitting in my living room that makes people ask what that thing is.

The epias have proven to me to be a let down, so now I am thinking m-atx with an athlon-64 venice or san diego. Does this box do what I want? (make my media portal box blend in with the rest of the living room set?)

There is a fine manufacturer A-Tech Fabrication of HTPC cases - one model is fanless design. You can even get a touch screen as an option.

Please note that these cases are not inexpensive but when reading on AVSForum I have not heard of any complaints. The manufacture has taken the time to perform heat load testing on all the models of HTPC cases becuase he knew of the need for quite computers.

Note: I do not own one of these cases (nor know of anyone personally that does) or have any financial gain with this company, but have just been following his fine follow-up and customer service on the AVS forums.

Ouch! Those cases, set up with some common things like a vfd, are almost $800! You're right those are expensive. They still seem rather large too.
