Dear Kiwis!

Next year I will travel around in NZ for about 4 weeks. Partly I will do this with a rental car. While preparing this trip, which is part of a world travel, I have two questions:

• Where to get a pre paid SIM card and what are reasonable Tarrifs - mainly for short domestic calls (finding accomodation, etc) and calls and texts back to Germany?
• Where would I get a reasonable low cost navigation system for these four weeks - car rentals charge something like 20NZD a day for an extra navigation device.

Any helpful hint shall make the old german very happy

I can't answer your questions because my iPhone is a work phone and I have no experience with pre-paying plus I use it for navigation if I don't know where I'm going

I'm not a Kiwi but maybe can help out a little bit as I just came back from a NZ vacation.
For prepaid SIM check out this article:

I have not purchased one, but was thinking about it before I travelled. Maybe check the websites of Telecom and Vodafone NZ for any discounts.

Regarding GPS: It is pretty easy to navigate without a GPS in NZ, as the number of streets is not too high and there are good signs giving directions. Could be different in e.g. Auckland, but when travelling the countryside or smaller cities, there is no need to have a GPS.

• One day visiting Singapore
• Singapore --> Sidney by plane
• Two days visiting Sidney
• Sidny --> Christchurch by plane
• Two weeks south island by coach
• Two weeks north island by rental car
• Napier--> Philadelphia by container ship
• Philadelphia --> New York by train
• Five days visiting New York
• New York --> Berlin by plane

Then I'll be broke

I managed that in scotland very well - bnut with my car. sitting on the "wrong" side might be funny - especially with the gear stick on the left side... a track of devastation will follow my route
