Typically, after MP has found some cover art for an album (either via internet lookup, id3 tags (if you have that option checked in config) or existing files in the directory), it will create a folder.jpg file in the album directory. However, it normally doesn't create a thumb for the folder itself until you actually go into that folder. These are stored in the thumbs\music\folder directory in app data.
