In the UK we have a few channels which are not 24x7. If I leave MP on one of these channels when I turn off and I turn on when it is off I have to go through the whole pain of waiting for it to tell me that there is no video detected (which can take up to 40 seconds)
I am guessing it is not possible to tell the channel is not actually transmitting without picking up the signal (or lack thereof) so ideal solution would be to put tune request in a thread which would still allow you to navigate the GUI and more importanly change channel killing the existing tune request and sending another.
Failing that a simple idea would be to time limit channels. BBC Three for example is transmitting from something like 19:00 to 03:00 so outside the hours request to tune to that channel could be ignored ? This could also make the EPG look a bit nicer as you could blank it out in some way rather than showing the same "no data available" message which would occur if you had no EPG for that channel.
