I am looking for an easy way to turn off subtitles.

I have .avi, xvid, and divx files that sometimes play subtitles. I can't seem to find where to turn them off at. My controller button does not work. Is there a keyboard shortcut? Is there an option located in one of these encoder/codec packs?

I love MP but it is a monster to try and get your hands around it. :)

    Thanks

You cannot turn off subtitles in avi files, it is not supported. Subtitles are hardcoded into video stream in avi. Use .mkv or .ogm files if u want to be able to turn off subtitles.

Thank you for that reply. I usually rip my dvds to my hard drive using DVDFab5 Platinum. I have a terabyte of space so i like to keep my collection at the touch of a button. I usually rip in a xvid avi format because I thought it would give me the best quality and sound and also compress it down in size. I will learn more about .mkv and .ogm files online and check them out. I never use or like subtitles or closed captioning. Maybe I am not using the best method for my dvd ripping. Do you suggest a different method? I use moving pictures as my movie plugin. I think some people rip them in .vob but I wasnt sure how they used moving pictures, i guess just by keeping all the .vob files for each movie in a seperate folder and then add all the folders...

Thanks for the reply. I had seen hand brake before but i didn't look into it that much and didn't know it had that capability. I found the DVD43 program as well. I guess I will wait to install until i know i need it.

So h.264 and mkv are the way to go huh? Good quality, good sound?

    Thanks again for the reply.

Digital TV in New Zealand is based on h.264. Fantastic picture quality. (h.264 does not encode sound, you typically use ac3, mp3 etc for the sound). My tvcard records tv with about 4Gig/Hour and use handbrake to reencode the h.264 with 1200kb/s with fantastic quality. I have problem to see the difference. This will shrink a 2 hour movie (8-10Gig) to just over 1Gig. I prefer slightly bigger files with better picture quality as I'm using a 42 inch HD lcd tv.

After a little bit of digging, I found an article which inform us:

As we all know, video formats, such as MKV, MP4 and AVI, can contain several subtitle streams in different formats or languages in one file. Technically, subtitles are divided into two types: hard subtitle and soft subtitle in video files. Hard subtitle is a part of the video images, and you cannot disable or hide it when playing the video file. Soft subtitle is an independent stream, and you can turn on or turn off it when playing.

The article also introduces a method on how to remove subtitle from MKV, MP4, AVI, etc with Faasoft Video Converter.
