TV Card recognisition after new installation of 1.2.0 beta (1 Viewer)

I have been running MP 1.1.2 with the Sky UK/IT/AUS EPG
enhancements (miroslav22) for a while under Windows 7 (64 bit)
without a problem using two Hauppauge WinTV Nova HD DVB S/S2
cards. Yesterday I decided to "bit the bullet" and install the
new MP 1.2.0 beta with the appropriate Sky UK enhancement. That
turned out to be a disaster!

I began with a fresh install of 1.2.0. beta but when I started
up the TV-Server configuration program the cards did not appear
in the left panel of the TV server list under my computer name.
They did appear in the right window but were marked as type
unknown and not initialised. Obviously the cards could not be
scanned for channels in this situation. The proper Hauppauge
drivers had been installed and were recognised by Windows under
Device Drivers.

I have tried a number of things to try to sort out the problem
such as:

1. As a test uninstall everything and then install the basic WINTV7
package for TV viewing/recording. WinTV7 worked fine with the
cards.

2. Uninstalled WINTV7 and then re-installed the original MP
1.1.2 package. Still no cards recognised.

3. Uninstalled everything including card drivers, shut the
system down, removed the cards, booted up, shut down,
re-installed the cards, booted up, installed the drivers,
installed MP. Still no success!

4. Installed MP 1.1.2 without the Sky enhancement. No success.

I'd be grateful if some one could point me in the right
direction for sorting things out. I'd be happy to supply a log
but I'm not sure which one is appropriate in this situation.

Hi TomPP

For a start, I'm sorry to say that you've done more harm than good by downgrading to 1.1.2. The upgrade to 1.2.0b makes your database incompatible with 1.1.x so you'll only have trouble with 1.1.x going forward unless you do a complete uninstall (ie. remove the DB) and reinstall. I recommend that you simply re-upgrade to 1.2.0b - it will be easier, save any settings in your DB, and its better than 1.2.0b hands down...

Regarding your TV card issues: cards being labelled as unknown indicates that they are not available in the OS. TV Server gets the list of cards from the operating system, so if the operating system says there are no cYou may have seen them in device manager, however I can almost guarantee that if you refreshed the device list that they would have disappeared. A complete power cycle (shutdown - ie. *not* restart - then cold boot) should have resolved the issue.

In any case, your installation is now inconsistent as I said above. Either do a complete uninstall and then reinstall 1.1.x or re-upgrade to 1.2.0b, put your cards back in, and then let us know if you still have problems.

Thanks for your quick response.

1. The TV cards are listed in the Device Manager under Sound and
Video Controllers. The system has been shutdown and rebooted
frequently and the cards still appear. When I shutdown and
remove the cards they disappear. After shutting down again,
plugging them and rebooting they re-appear. Also WinTV7 uses the
cards to scan for channels and displays TV without problems.
Thus it would appear that the cards are definitely known to the
OS.

2. Initially I had been using 1.1.2 without a problem. It was
only when I UPGRADED to 1.2.0 beta that things went wrong. The
cards disappeared from TV-Server at that point.

3. After your comments I did the following:

a. I uninstalled 1.1.2. I chose the "Full MP products cleanup"
in the options which I would assume removes all traces of
previous installations.

b. I shutdown and removed the cards and then rebooted.

c. I installed (fresh) 1.2.0 beta specifying that I wanted to
view TV. During the installation I got the message, "Failed to
upgrade database!". During the TV-Server part of the
installation a "Setup Database connection" window opened. It had
checked MYSQL5 at the top and in the various dataentry boxes
gave in order Tom-Media-PC (my media PC name), MySQL5, MpTvDb,
root and asked for a password. I tried the suggested
"MediaPortal" but that was not accepted. I then carried on by
simply closing the window. The installation then completed.

d After that I tried to start TV-Server Config. It gave again
the message "Failed to upgrade database!" and would not start.

e. I reinstalled the cards after another shutdown and again
tried to use TV-Server. I got the same "Failed to upgrade
database!" message and refusal to start.

f. Finally I uninstalled 1.2.0 beta and reinstalled with the
same outcome.

Sorry to be so long winded but I wanted to make clear precisely
what was going on.

I finally managed to sort out the problem. The key was the MSQL5
database. When I did yet another fresh install of 1.2.0 beta I
managed to get "MediaPortal" accepted as a password. I was then
able to delete the old database and a new one appeared to be
automatically generated. After that the cards appeared in
TV-Server and I was able to do a channel scan. Things are now
back to normal!
