TV Plugin and broken aspect ratios (1 Viewer)

I'm using a Nebula DVB-T PCI card with the latest MP + TV Engine SVN (20070914).

If I am viewing DVB-T television (either recorded from the Record Now and Recorded TV section or directly viewing the TV) I find that the "Normal" aspect ratio setting displays the picture incorrectly.

When viewing UK DVB-T broadcasts that are anamorphic widescreen, MP is displaying them as 4:3 pictures.

The only way to "fix" this is to manually select "Stretch" which of course breaks channels such as UKTV History which broadcast in 4:3 :(

Viewing the streams directly in VLC show that the aspect ratio is in the stream correctly, and (bizarrely) watching recordings from the Videos section in MP also displays them in the correct AR.

Any ideas how to make the My TV section work correctly?

I've tried all of the different codecs, although the default one is the only one that can render stations such as ITV4 correctly.

Interestingly I've discovered that this bug is not consistant. Occasionally I can tune MP to a "good" station such as BBC1, restart MP and find that it can suddenly work out the correct aspect ratio for all stations.

Broken aspect ratios is a very long and deeply dull discussion involving wss, flags and detection techniques. Short version is that nVidia PureVideo works perfectly with all UK channels, not much else does.

Occasionally a new SVN breaks the ability to detect and display correct aspect ratios, regardless of codec used, but this is rare and is quickly corrected.

Give PureVideo a try, at least you’ll be able to exclude the problem just being down to codec.

Hi,

I just installed the the latest RC2 with SVNs from 23.09. I was trying to get the DVB subtitles (Finland) to work but alas no luck for my setup so far. I will try again in a few weeks. Unfortunately it seems that the Cyberlink (PowerDVD 6) codec no longer works with TV (with my setup). I switched to Purevideo and it works quite well except the 4:3 aspect ratio. Previously I got perfect (as far I can tell) source format detection with PowerDVD codec but now 4:3 is detected(?) as 16:9 and is full screen (ie. short and wide). Real 16:9 programs look great luckily.

Is it the codec which detects the source format aspect ratio? Or MP? I am not clear on this (and lot of other things also :)

I can live with some small problems if I just understand why they exist...
