Tv plugin vs TV server development (1 Viewer)

I'm a new user and have been looking through the manual where it mentions a TV engine (plugin) as well as the TV Server. I hadn't heard of the TV engine plugin before. Is the plugin and old method of getting the TV to work? And is the TV server the one being developed now? (The TV server certainly seems to have a lot more features).

    The plugin is what gets installed in MP so it can communicate with the TV server.
