TV server or just stand alone MP? Which is best? (1 Viewer)

Ok. I've been using MP now for almost a year. I am running it on a stand alone PC in the living room and it's just awesome. I have three tuners, 5.1 speakers, 3000 music tracks and 320Gb hard drive with another 500Gb in the wings in case I need it (I don't). The PC isn't special but it seems to cope.

Here's the thing: I dabbled with the TV server 9 months ago but decided to temporarily change back to running MP on its own while I got it all working properly. Now I have it working fine but I am reluctant to try the TV server again in case I am taking a backward step.

Can anyone give any clear reasons why I should change to the TV server rather than stay with solo MP? Is TV3 more stable or less? If I just use TV3 on the same PC as MP is there any benefit over MP on its own?

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and a definite HUGE thanks to the MP team. I, along with many other users, are very grateful. It just keeps getting better and better.

Personally I had a hard time starting out with TV3. It did not help that I started right at the moment when there was some issue with the Tv Server SVN versions.

In my case there are 2 big advantages I can mention:

1. TV server keeps running even if I close MP. I have a "dedicated" machine, but I sometimes close MP to browse the net, or to run a database sync of the music.. or to check for new coverart... or to update skins...

You used to need to be sure you had no recording running...

2. The "Self Contained Web Interface" which allows you to see your TV Guide from any other PC. I have not yet tried programing recordings, but I read it works well !

Another advantage is that it supports HDTV (h264) in case you have access to such broadcasts.

i am pretty happy with my multiseat setup.
    • one server which stores all TV-Cards
    • 3 clients which get TV and media from the server (100MBit LAN)
    • dvb-s2 works flawless with tge floppy-s2 and coreavc 1.6 codec.
    • for mpg2 i use MPV
    • for audio MPA

the setup is still much work and a bit complex for the average user, which we will try change for TV-Server 1.0 :)

Any idea how soon TV server 1.0 is to being released? I'm thinking that maybe I should defer the decision until then.

it will take a considerable long time to get the server and client plugin stable.

and as always, the community can help us by providing detailed bugreports :)

    Point taken.

I have come to the conclusion that I need the best of both worlds: keep my existing MP and play around with the TV server until I am happy with it. I have a spare hard drive so I will dual boot and set up TV server as the second boot option leaving MP as the default.

    Thanks for your help.
