Hello,

i face some TV live struttering with any version of MP. I have noticed that it increases when my hard disk is running and decreases when not running.
I was wondering if reducing disk activity is a good lead to get rid of struttering.

Could we list all solutions to reduce disk activity on Windows XP or Vista (services, ...).

If only we could stop the timeshifting, but maybe there is a optimized setting for buffer size and file numbers?

Thanks

Many have written on stuttering, but have you noticed this all along, or only since MP 1.0.1 ?? How about on 720p or 1080i material? Read my post about 1080i stuttering and see if it fits... you may have to buy a new video card.

    Suggestions for less HDD activity

Ensure lots of free space on drives
    Defragment your drive
    Fixed windows paging file size
Put windows paging file and timeshift folder on seperate HDD (or seperate partition if only 1xHDD) to Windows & MP installation
Create a ramdisk and store timeshift folder on ramdisk
If using vista then use a usb memory stick to run readyboost feature
Run a cleaner installation of windows without any additional software
Run msconfig or services.msc to remove unneeded programs/processes

Put windows paging file and timeshift folder on seperate HDD (or seperate partition if only 1xHDD) to Windows & MP installation

Putting pagefile to a separate partition might even worsen up the stuttering as HDD heads have bigger distance to travel between the swap file and timeshifting file.

Althou it shouldn't matter as you should always optimize the installed RAM amount to be enough that no swapping is going to happen in any case. Its not good to use swap file as memory when you are doing something time critical like video playback.

If using vista then use a usb memory stick to run readyboost feature

Any users have reported using readyboost to cause hickups in TV playback. Most likely this is caused by specific USB sticks that have high latency. So as general rule try disabling readyboost if you are having stuttering with live tv.

seperate partition for dynamic paging file can reduce defragmentation of system drive, however with a fixed paging file size you wont have that problem anyway. i think if your using the paging file to do memory swapping during video playback, then you have way too little ram and even if the paging file is nearer the start of the hdd it wont make a difference.

didnt know that some users have stuttering problems with readyboost, that's good to know, theoretically readyboost should reduce paging file useage which should result in less hdd useage.
