I'm still stuck with this installation problem. I checked my system event log, googled around but get no clear picture where the reason might be.

I found it out, finally!

The reason was that I had installed the 'wrong' vcredist_x86.exe. MS released a SP1 (v8.0.50727.762) of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86) which is the correct one. I googled the version 1.0 of it which has the same filename but different contents...

So the correct link is this one: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
