Upscale standard-definition TV (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I would like to know if it's possible to upscale standard-definition (SD) TV when using TV-Server and how this can be achieved? My standard-definition TV looks horrible on my HDTV.

I currently use FFDShow to upscale DVD's since I have FFDShow set to handle MPEG2 DVD and video in MediaPortal, but for some reason FFDShow does not get activated when I stream/watch TV from TV-server. CoreAVC, which is set to decode h.264, does get activated though. Does TV-server stream the TV-signal as h.264 encoded material?

I suppose upscaling will have to take place on the client as I don't have any options in the TV-Server interface. Is an alternative for CoreAVC that has upscaling capability or should I try setting FFDShow to handle h.264 for television in MediaPortal configuration?

Best regards.

I think you answered the question yourself :

Yeap !

should I try setting FFDShow to handle h.264 for television in MediaPortal configuration

Yeap !

Or you can also try to have CoreAVC decoding and then adding ffdshow as a postprocessing filter using MP Configuration, it may work.

TV-server streams the timeshift buffer or recorded tv file content to the client (so it is encoded mpeg-2/H264 etc) - all of the decoding, scaling etc is done by the client.

The video renderer (VMR9/EVR) upscales/downscales to match the display size - how good this is depends on the video card+driver scaling quality.

If you have lots of CPU power, you could try enabling the 'raw' video formats in FFDShow and adding it as a post-processing filter in MP.

If I go to "MediaPortal > Television" and set h.264 to be handled by FFDShow instead of CoreAV, then go to "FFDShow" and set h.264 to "libavcodec", the FFDShow Video Decoder logo does not show up in the task bar and the content does not get upscaled.

If I keep CoreAVC as h.264-filter in "MediaPortal > Television", add FFDShow Raw Filter under "Postprocessing", enable the raw filter under "FFDShow > Codecs", I see the FFDShow Video Decoder logo in the task bar and the picture gets upscaled. Unfortunately it stutteres badly and doesn't look very good (so my X2 5050+ is apparently not strong enough).

What should I do to make FFDShow do the entire job and not just postprocessing after CoreAVC?

MP blocks the use of FFDShow decoder in MyTV (because of problems with the combination at present).

That said, if CoreAVC+FFDShow is too much for your CPU, FFDShow doing both is likely to be even worse since it's a less efficient H.264 decoder than CoreAVC...

What video card and OS do you use ? - the standard EVR renderer upscaling via my nVidia 9500GT looks OK to me on a 37" 1920 x 1080p display....

    Hi toghether,

the postprocessing and upscaling process using ffdshow is decribed here Postprocessing - MediaPortal Manual Documentation).

I configured ffdshow in a way that all video content will be upscaled without using the postprocessing funtionality. Instead of the "internal" method I use AVI synth for sharpen the videos. So far it works.

    Regards Juro
