Using MediaPortal WITHOUT a TV Tuner Card (1 Viewer)

I realise this may sound strange at first, but I will explain. My Internet Service Provider has given its subscribers access to some local TV channels through our internet connection. We downloaded 'VideoLan VLC' - a small application that enables one to watch (and record) streamed media on ones' PC. All well and good.

This means that I do not need a TV tuner card to watch (at least some) TV on my PC. I don't even have a TV tuner / capture card installed on my PC. To watch TV I start VLC, which opens the (UDP) stream that I want to watch. The application displays the TV image on my PC monitor, and / or transcodes the stream to be saved as a file on my PC. It's enough for me at this point in time.

One major limitation of this (for me) is that sometimes I want to record a show while I am not at home. VideoLan has almost zero built-in support for scheduled recordings.

A simple (I hope!) question: will I easily be able to use MediaPortal to perform unattended (scheduled) recordings of my TV channels with my current PC configuration? Does it support scheduled recording? And if so - how will I go about setting up MediaPortal to do this? Can it process streams, or does it ONLY support hardware TV tuner cards?

I have read through MANY threads on this forum trying to find an answer, but all of them referred to TV tuner cards - which I do not have.

Please give as much detail as you can - I am completely new to all of this!

Kind regards

Bannor
