How to use the Vista MCE remote (Philips SRM 5100) with Media portal on Windows XP
mods, please forgive and move if its in the wrong place.
After going through loads of web pages, installing numerous drivers, programs and ordering loads of useless stuff from ebay, here is what I figured out.
Although the solution seems so easy, just thought of posting it for the benefit of other people so they dontn end up wasting time and money like me.
The issue is that the vista's remote comes with an IR receiver which is NOT compatible with XP, so any key presses on the remote are not received by the O/S. So,
You will need the SRM5100 remote ofcourse.
Next you will need the IR receiver of the MCE 2005 philips remote.
You will have to unplug the SRM m5100 USB IR receiver and use the old one's USB IR receiver, they (old IR receiver & new remote (SRM 5100)) work together perfectly.
If you are having issues with the IR Reciever drivers, try installing alternative drivers available on this forum and they work.
Additionally I have installed the mptray plugin and it starts media portal when I press the green button, even when media port is not running in the back ground. of course, the whole credit goes to the guy who coded the mptray app.
There could other easier/cheaper ways to solve this issue, but this is how I fixed it and I am sharing it.
My personal reason for trying so hard to use the Vista remote instead of already woring MCE 2005 remote:
-The coolest remote I have had ever
-Its a universal remote too, so had it configured to control the Media center, Toshiba TV, TV box. everything works perfectly
-Like already said, way too cool remote for £25
Look for pictures of what I was talking about. One pict shows vista remote, 2 show MCE 2005 remote, so basically you need the vista remote and the IR receiver of the MCE 2005.
