I was wondering how others are handling this scenario. I have a dedicated server, which is a simple file share. So all of the video files are just sitting in various folders on the share. I have a number of HTPCs hooked up to TVs throughout the house. I set up MediaPortal on one of the HTPCs to evaluate it, and had it scan IMDB for my video files. That took quite a long time, and then I had to go through and manually fix 10% or so of the movies, which also took a long time.
So my question is 1) how do I export that database from that machine and propagate it to the other HTPCs? I see an Import command but not Export. 2) Better yet, how can I have this database reside on my server where all HTPCs can access that shared resource from? That way I don't need multiple copies of the database on multiple machines to have to maintain.
Now if I'm going about this wrong at a more fundamental level - specifically if I should use some other method of sharing the files than a simple fileshare - then I'm open to suggestions. My server is not a powerful machine (3Ghz single core), so no encoding / transcoding, etc, can go on. Just it dumping data to the clients is all. But if there's some protocol that is meant for media, which provides directory services, database info, etc, then I'm open to that. One of the biggest problems I see with MediaPortal at this point (after evaluating it for a couple days) is that it is slow to pull up the listing of videos (only a couple hundred videos are in the main folder). So if another method of sharing the videos would help performance in that way too then it would take of two problems at once.
