Tools and other software VNC / RDP / Others (1 Viewer)

I often find myself remotely working on MePo. Upon now I always used RealVNC since that with RDP I cannot see MePo or other DirectX applications. However this experience is usually so painfully slow with VNC.

Does anyone have any (tested) recommendations for other remote desktop software? Any particular VNC variant that works FAST? I would avoid TeamViewer or any similar software that installs (too) many drivers and stuff and bloats your HTPC
