I run MP on my htpc in the living room, but I also run it on numerous PCs around the house, including a 24" monitor which runs at a native 1920x1200.
This is a terrible resolution for MP because it stretches all the images vertically, such as fanart, thumbnails, etc. Of course, videos play properly, but when not playing videos, I don't like this incorrect aspect ratio.
MP doesn't allow you to specify the starting resolution, so you either have to run it fullscreen, or in a window (which looks terrible and you have to manually resize it).
I want MP to display itself in only 1920x1080 so that everything looks correct. To do this, I use Display Changer from 12noon. It's freeware and just works. You can get it at
The way it works is that instead of running Media Portal, you run dc.exe, specify the resolution and the program to run. When MP finishes, it switches back to the previous resolution. There's a very small delay as the resolution changes.
To simplify matters, I modified the Media Portal shortcut as shown:
"C:\Program Files\12noon Display Changer\dc.exe" -width=1920 -height=1080 "C:\Program Files\Team MediaPortal\MediaPortal\MediaPortal.exe"
Leave "Start In:" pointing to Media Portal's directory.
That's about it. Clicking the shortcut quickly changes my monitor to 1920x1080 and starts MP. There's a black band at the top and bottom of my screen, but at least the images are all correct. Videos get played within this space and don't get expanded to the full native 1920x1200 resolution, which you may or may not care about.
You can get 12noon Display Changer at Display Changer :: 12noon
It just works. No nag, donateware, or anything.
In the ideal world, MP would have startup parameters where you can specify the resolution to use, or perhaps have window size/cropping functions, but this is nearly as good.
