Watching DVB-S/S2 encrypted content legally (1 Viewer)

I need to watch satellite TV using a internal card without using the provided decoder box. From the information i gather i need a TV card which support DVB-S/S2 and a CI slot for this purpose. However i have several unclear areas.

1. How do i know whether the CI slot is capable of reading the card i received from my satellite TV provider? What are the standards and how do i know which one my provider use?
2. Can there be any restrictions from my satellite service provider when i try to use this setup?
3. Will i be able to watch multiple channels simultaneously using one subscription/one card?
4. I need to receive 3D content as well. Would a card with DVB-S2 support this?


I'd appreciate very much if some one could help me find answers to these.

The CI slot does not read the card - you buy a CAM to insert into the CI slot, and the smartcard from your provider goes into the CAM. What you should be concerned about is whether the tuner that you buy supports the CAM that you buy.

What are the standards and how do i know which one my provider use?

Do you mean encryption standards? If so, there are *many*. Irdeto, SECA, BetaCrypt, NDS, Nagravision... the list goes on. The smart card may be labelled with an encryption standard logo, else check the transponder details on King Of Sat.

What kind of restrictions are you thinking of? The setup would have similar capabilities to an STB.

3. Will i be able to watch multiple channels simultaneously using one subscription/one card?

Depends on the CAM and tuner that you buy.

4. I need to receive 3D content as well. Would a card with DVB-S2 support this?

DVB-S2 and 3D are not related. 3D is a content standard whereas DVB-S2 is a transmission standard. The right question would be "does MediaPortal support showing 3D content?", to which I believe the answer is "yes".
