What about videos and such in another room? (1 Viewer)

I have started looking at this project to try and understand if the machine exactly what it is and get a better understanding of what it can do. I do, however, have a question. I am looking at needing a a way to send HD (at least 720p) from a basement machine to other machines in the house. What I mean is that if I have a MediaPortal machine downstairs with my whole DVD library ripped onto it and want to watch a movie in my master bedroom how does one do it? I have looked at linuxmce (linuxmce.com) which is more of a client/server solution but seems to get pretty pricey very quickly. Can someone please enlighten me?

1. just select the folder where you store all your movies on th PC and share it in the network
2. on the other PC(s) you then map this folder as a networkshare (the it appears like a HDD in your windows explorer)
3. in mediaportal configuration -> movies you then add a new source and select this mapped networkshare

This works fine as this is what I do. The only problem you run into is any imdb/coverart info for the videos.

You've not mentioned what type of network you are running in the house.
If you run a wired network between the machines - no problem, should work fine. Gigabit network is desirable but 100 Mbit network will work just as well (this is the most common type of wired network connection).

If you run a wireless network for connectivity - you may get some issues depending on how good the signal strength is between the two machines. If poor, you will get some freezing as it tries to stream the video across the wireless network.

Chris' (InfinityLoop's) response holds true in both situations - you will need to share the drive on the machine where the movies are located.
