Just wondering what codes people use and what you think will give the best quality for me.

What codecs would you use for: TV, XVID/DIVX (SD content), DVD playback?

Currently i am using ffdshow for everything I need and was wondering if i could get better quality from using other codecs?

I also have Real/Quicktime/AC3 Codecs for the stuff that need it.

Do people use post processing? Does it help? What settings do you have?

Thanks.

Thanks - I was already aware of the guide and have read it again.

It mainly concentrates on ffdshow, which is what i am using at the moment, but i was wondering if i can get any better quality from using other codecs for TV and Films...etc..

I try to keep my setup as simple as possible, except for MediaPortal and Daemon Tools(+ drivers of course) the only thing I install is:
    - PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra for HD and SD content(TV & DVD)
    - DivX codec from divx.com

Been running rock stable since late 2005.

Same here. I dont even install the MPA/MPV or dscaler codecs with MP. the only additional codecs I install are FFDshow Tryouts, since FFDshow has been abandoned.

    ffdshow tryouts:
    - Avisynth support rocks
    - somewhat multithreaded
    - can be use to play almost any popular codec
    - configuration options galore

I have a radeon x1300 pro running so I mainly use the avivo codec from radeon which has some excellent performance with a radeon x1x00 card. I did also download k-lite codec full pack which pretty much offers support for every codec and package file excepet for MKV. K-Lite does support ffdshow heavily but also comes with the popular alternatives for everything to like the cyberlink codec, divx, xvid, quicktime, reaplayer, etc...

I have just reinstalled and I have the following codecs installed for handling SD and HD TV, and all films and videos i have:

    PowerDVD 7.3
    FFDshow (from ffdshow-tryouts)
    Real Alternative
    QuickTime Alternative
    Haali Media Splitter
    CoreAVC 1.6

So I have PowerDVD doing the first decode/deinterlace etc. FFDshow as a postprocesses to resize (even with all options off, I find ffdshow improves my picture).

I have CoreAVC for the BBC HD channel.

The Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative are there incase I have a Real or Quicktime file I want to play.

For audio, everything uses ffdshow. with most things sent via SPDIF to my decoder.

Just a note: you want to look into using SPDIFER (http://ac3filter.net/projects/spdifer) instead of ffdshow audio decoder if you`re sending all AC3/DTS through SPDIF straight out to your receiver. When I was using ffdshow audio decoder, I found it was re-encoding all AC3/DTS audio to Dolby Digital 5.1 format 48kHz/640kbps. I know this because my Yamaha receiver indicates the incoming sample and bit rates. So for example, if I was playing an x264 movie that was DTS 48kHz/1536kbps, it would be sent over SPDIF to my receiver as DD5.1 48kHz/640kbps. Similarly, a DD5.1 48kHz/448kbps audio stream would be sent to my receiver over SPDIF as DD5.1 48kHz/640kbps.

I finally figured out that ffdshow audio decoder was the culprit and since replaced it with SPDIFER and my sound quality is also better now (true to the source).

I love ffdshow for video decoding, and use nothing else, but SPDIFER or AC3Filter is the way to go for SPDIF audio output.
