What does the Server do? (1 Viewer)

I'm a bit confused by this client/server thing. I have MP2 server on one system, but what does it do? The client still streams from that computer but it says there is no server on the network. I can also close the server and the client still works.

All I see is a small window when the server runs. How do you connect the clients and what exactly is the server supposed to do?

I like the client already. This seems to run very smoothly.

Okay, I found a port to forward in another post and that allows me to connect the client to the server and I see the difference in the menus. However, the videos play badly in the Global Shares (lag, pause, glitch, etc.) but play perfectly using the Local Shares mode. I see also that the Local Shares mode doesn't allow FF or RWD controls.

    Hi TE5LA,

I was just about to answer to your first post, but you were faster :)

Do I understand your first post correctly that you have MP2-Client and MP2-Server running on the same machine? If so, where are your global shares located? Are they also on the same system?

No, they are on different machines. I found that removing the local shares seemed to clear up the poor performance with some files, but now some videos just show black with audio only. I did not notice this while while not using the server and using only local shares. It is also odd that some files play fine that use the same codecs as the ones that don't play.

On a side note, is there a way yet to change the weather display to Fahrenheit rather than Celsius? All in all, MP2 looks good, especially being alpha. I am back here trying this after being disgusted with a Blu-ray/Media Streaming box that I'm returning due to its awful design. None of the set-top boxes come close to the PC media solutions. I just don't get that.

TE5LA, basically, the server brings the media library and some other features. Yes, the client works without the server, but that is only a feature. The normal operation mode is with an attached server. Without server, you can only operate on your local machine. With server, you get the media library features like media search over all the media in the system.
In this old picture, I wanted to make the features clear.

Okay, the only thing is, all my videos play perfectly using Local Shares but mess up horribly (lag, pixelation, etc.) when using the Global Shares (server) mode.

Oh, and I mean Local Shares on the same server computer, not on the client computer. Both are streaming from the same source.

Can you say which kind of video you play? And which network connection?
Maybe we still have performance problems on some network connections...
It may be a MKV package using MPC codecs or an AVI, doesn't seem to matter. The connection is over a LAN which has no problems playing files using several different computers or media players. MP1 plays all files fine. Windows Media Player plays all fine. The only one I've seen with this issue is MP2 using Global Shares mode. As I said, it plays the same files fine using Normal Shares mode. I don't think it's a networking issue.

With this same connection, I've played files using XBMC, Boxee, Iomega Screenplay DX, and a Western Digital media box, all without a hitch.

Well, we use our own network transfer protocol. And we HAVE issues with that ;-)
When I have time, I'll have a look at it. It's long ago that I tested the network transfer for movies.
