What is IPTV? How can I use it? (1 Viewer)

I keep hearing about IPTV and all I know is it is something to do with Internet TV protocol. I'm given to understand I can use it with MediaPortal.

Can someone tell me what it is and how can I use it with MediaPortal? Can I get any kind of US TV stations or shows or programs using it?

Would really like to get some info from someone who uses it.

I think IP tv is a standard to stream your life tv over Ethernet. You will need a sat>IP server and a client for viewing.
