Hi. Im looking for a remote that can navigate mediaportal PLUS control my tv and amp. Currently im interested in Harmony 525 as it is a programmable universal remote. What about other remotes? Can i program mce remote to use my tv and amp? what mce remotes should i have? Microsoft or other brands? i heard that the latest mce remote is vista mce remote? should i get that? i cant find the page in microsoft site. is it dead?

Thanks. Im loving my mediaportal even more every day.

There are many Threads about remotes here, and i am also searching the right one.
In short, what i learnd here is: Original MCE Remote works out-of-the-box which is the solution with the highest comfort.
The Harmony also works, there are threads how to get them working. But you have to configure them by youre self.
Most Remotes that get recognized as HID device by Windows can be used with Eventghost and the Message Plugin.

X10 Remotes, some work , most not really good.

Gyration MCE remote.

Bit on the pricey side, but well worth it.

Has a gyration mouse built into it, kinda like a WII. Really handy, ie, when you just need to quickly change a setting etc.

My HTPC lives in the front room, which is quite minimalistic, so no table or anything for a tacky mouse. (Who wants a mouse or keyboard in the living room anyways?)

"MCE Remote" is just the type of remote. They are not necessarily made by microsoft. A number of manufacturers make them, HP, Rock, Hauppage (lots more). Look for a "vista certified" version.

If you want to control more than one device (ie amp AND HTPC + whatever else, tv, etc) then consider a Logitech Harmony remote. This will emulate an MCE remote and also emulate any other remotes (ie your amp) for devices you want to control. It has a nice macro feature, so at the press of a button, it will switch on your HTPC, TV, AMP and switch your TV and AMP to the correct channels so everything's ready to use. (much easier than juggling remotes for each device)

BUt when using a Harmony at first you need the right IR- Receiver.
But i cant help you with that, because i dont have a harmony.

I just ordered a Dell MCE Remote frm U.K.

I think the real Microsoft MCE was able to control the TV, because it also had an IR emitter on the receiver box.

I have a Harmony and it works well. The programming app is not very user friendly IMO but once you get the hang of it, it works well.
