What operating system is recommended? (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

I need to cleanup my home server, and I want give MediaPortal a try again. What is currently the recommended operating system? XP, Vista or Win7? And 32 or 64 bit?

The hardware is an AMD Athlon X2 BE-2350 2.1GHz processor with 2x512MB DDR2, PowerColor AX4650 512MB GDDR3 passive graphics card, PowerColor Theater 550 PRO analog tuner card, inside a SilverStone LC16M case with SoundGraph OEM VFD display. Pretty simple stuff, the system is 3 years old.

I can see the Theater 550 is not supported by Win7, but I don't mind buying a new tuner card.

I won't be doing any DVB or BluRay in the near future.

For the rest, the system is being used as a central media backup and remote desktop server for 2-3 people with a concurrent remote desktop hack. And a simple game now and then, Lego Indian Jones is very popular in this house...

What would you recommend?

Personally I would go with W7 and the very soon to be released MP 1.1.0 RC1

W7 has much better media playback and handling.

With only 1 gig of memory i would stay with XP (XP - X64 not supported by MP)

Thanks, I think I will go with Win7 again.

Roy, you're on the mark about the memory! Actually, at the moment it's 1.5GB, but that's still very little. The weird thing is, I've been using this machine (even with only 1GB) as a concurrent login remote desktop server for some time, and have never had any problems with the amount of memory! But with the current memory prices, I am going to buy a few more gigs as soon as I have any suspect that memory is causing problems....

Guess it depends on usage, when testing here everything was slow as heck with less then 2 gig(vista & win 7 both x64) to much disk writing, now have 4 on laptop(Win 7 x64) & 6 on htpc(vista x64) & not had mem problems yet (but it also could be other problems / bugs i have seen ).

The good thing with remote desktop, is that you don't hear the harddisk rattling... And that actually makes a slow computer lots more bearable! Though I have to say, I have had none or very few "stuck" applications because of excessive disk writing.
