hi

new to the forum, but not new to forums generally, and an accomplished builder of pc's

however, i am not able to understand where i have f....ed up

i am running an am2 machine with plenty of resources, that initially was quite happy to run mediaportal 1.0 at least to load and play music and see my pics and view the weather (and even play sudoko)
however, the latest driver for onboard nvidia 6150 chip seemed to ruin it for me, although as it was a new build i never proved it would play video (ripped dvd's) on this setup
indeed, after the new nvidia driver was installed it crashed incessantly when i launched it

previously i had a 939 gigabyte running it very acceptably, but the current build hangs on trying to get the video to play on merely hitting the icon to launch that aspect

my pics, and music and the weather are fine

my tv tuner is a winfast dtb1000s and not supported i understand..... i can live with that for now, but even choosing to not load the tv aspect of the program is not helping

my outcomes are 1) freeze on trying to access my dvd's with the old nvidia driver, or crash and burn (reboot on simply launching) with the new nvidia driver

help ! i am frustrated, and love the interface and my previous use, but this is horrible....

my codec is from power dvd, and the rest of my system is win xp sp3 and fully patched to date - i am using onboard nvidia 6150 on an asus m2npv-vm, with a brisbane 3600+ at stock, and 2x1gig of kingmax 667 ddr2, and a pci envy24 based sound card

save me from this torture !! :D

Can you play DVDs in Windows Media Player 11?

What version of Windows?

Did you install the nForce drivers first?

Do you have at least 128mb (of the shared RAM) dedicated to the video card?

Be sure you are using the proper driver. There is a driver for 8800 and up, and a separate driver for the older cards. If the current driver doesn't work, you could always try a WHQL driver that's mature, but maybe only a couple of years past when the 6xxx cards were popular, maybe from 2006 or something (I've had to to that before on older cards).

If the problems are isolated to MediaPortal, I think a good place to start would be to check your DVD codec selections in Config ... try MPV Decoder Filter and MPA Decoder Filter.

thanks for the swift response

i could play dvd's with the later nvidia driver (specifically for the onboard 6150)

to my immense embarrassment i have read the instructions  and been rewarded with a modicum of success - i feel i must quit while i am ahead, as my 6yo is suffering kung fu panda withdrawal from my experimentation

i had to download several drivers, and my next effort will be to kill power dvd and see if the absence is noticed, as the bl...dy thing auto executes on boot, much to my disgust, regardless of my settings in the config for it

again, sincere thanks... i'll doubtless be back for some embellishment after a little celebration
