Why doesn't my TV and HTPC output 24p correctly? (2 Viewers)

Just want to put my 2c: For more than a year I was running 60Hz for 24fps and 23.976fps contents using 3:2 pull down. Things were ok but when I switched to 24Hz the picture was clearly smoother that 60Hz, but I got audio sync problem with 23.976fps content (24fps played perfectly).

I installed ReClock and now both 23.976fps and 24fps play smoothly without audio sync problem.

When I play a movie at 50Hz I don't notice any stutter of any kind but in slow (but not too slow) panning scenes you can easily see that there's room for improvement, that the panning is not as smooth as possible.

Maybe you want too much here. Panning on a cinema projector with 35mm film isn't exactly smooth, either. Every image on a cinema projector is shown twice (2*24Hz = 48Hz), so it just can't be absolutely smooth.

Yep, I think that you probably had a TV that couldn't do 120hz (i.e. max was probably 60, hence 24fps into 60 = 2.5 therefore skipping .5 frames, whereas 120hz/24fps = 5 - no frames are skipped).

Check out the HDTV Blur link above, it states that PAL/SECAM countries adopt 100 Hz and NTSC countries typically adopt 120 Hz. My TV can do both (advertised as 100hz) and I'm pretty sure most 100 Hz TV's will do 120hz.

Reclock worked for me when I used 24hz for avi's but I didn't get it working for MKV's because of the audio. It didn't seem to work with AC3/DTS - no sound. If I turned on the SPDIF option (which it said was not recommended), it would still go out of sync.

I've tried it with about 8 MKV's 720p & 1080p - all work well @ 60hz output to a 120hz TV.

Just read this too:

PAL countries speed the 24 fps film speed by 4% to obtain 25 fps, therefore movies in the PAL format are completely free of Telecine judder effects. As a result, 100 Hz televisions do not suffer from telecine judder as 120 Hz models do.

This would explain why 50hz was good for TV for me, while 60Hz was good for film.
