    Spoke to soon :(

It seems like part of this HDD is bad however it still has normal SMART values + no bad sectors. I'll just disable the 650gb partition and keep using it as a system drive until I get around to replacing it.

you must make a full scan with the WD tool, a quick scan is not enough to find anything and SMART is, let me tell it like this: It never told me that something is wrong but the HDD was obviously broken ;)
I had the same some weeks ago. Just bought a new HDD, moved files and everything is fine again :)

So I was still having I/O errors whenever I tried to make a system image using Win7 Backup. Tried reformatting PC twice and doing low level write + read destructive HDD scan tests. Then I thought hmmm might be a bad SATA cable -> Problem seems to be solved now (hopefully).
