So I am reading lots of posts of folks loading MP 1.1 on Win 7. I am wondering what is motivating you to do this? I have run and tested win7 media center, no disrespect to MP, but if you have win7MC why run anything else?

I can only think of one reason, ability to run comskip, what am I missing?

Is everyone just so familiar with and used to MP that they automatically load it? Has no one else run win 7 MC?

The TV part of 7 is very reliable, but then is seriously let down for Movies\TVSeries + at least 10 other plugins that are a must part of using MP.

So for me, there is just not enough functionality with MCE to use daily.

ps. yes I have just installeded Win7Ultimate, done all updates, set up MCE, and nothing has changed since my release candidate version I installed 6 months ago, so back to good old MP :)

I tried it and it is very nice... I switched back to MediaPortal after a few days because I liked a lot of thing much better in MP (tvserver with multiple clients, movingpictures, tvseries, ...).

And hey, did I mention it it's free and open source ;)

The main-reasons why I run MP:

    - TV-Server, makes it easy to use any computer in the house to watch TV.
    - TV-Series, last time I checked similar plugin for WMC it was far behind the MP-plugin
    - Customization (menus, skins, codecs etc is so easy to set up the way I want it)
    - I want to say Movies, but there are a couple of good movie-plugins for WMC now so it's about as good as MovingPictures.

    Hi there,

Last time I checked there were issues with HD and scrambled channels on W7MCE?

But to be honest W7MCE is a very good product for most mainstream requirements, but you can't be the diversty of plugins and options for MP.

Plus being able to speak direct to the devoted developers of MP is priceless!

    I'm sticking with MP :)

These are the top reasons I use MP over MCE:

    - Native support for Hauppauge HD-PVR
    - Client machines share the same guide, tv tuners, recordings (MCE requires you to have an extender which doesnt support NetFlix or H264 videos. BTW, extenders have been discontinued and I will not have a loud XBox in every room.)
    - Moving Pictures
    - TV Series
    - Email Management

So for me MP offers much, much more than MCE will ever offer. I check the greenbutton.com every now and then to see whats happening and I have to laugh at folks that want ALL the same features MP offers, but dont want to even try it out. Whats even funnier is that Microsoft is not listenening to requests from the users, and what they really want.

For me the reasons why I still use MediaPortal:

    1) MP far more customizable that MCE…I like changing the look and feel every week.
    2) I really dislike the up-down-side navigation used in MCE….no thanks!!
    3) I still can’t receive TV-Schedule data for South-Africa in MCE, and to import XMLTV files into MCE is a bitch!!!
    4) MediaPortal has many plug-ins, which are either not available in MCE or if available cost money to get….
    5) MediaPortal community far better than any MCE-communities I’ve seen.

I too switched to Win7 Ultimate x64, patched it to the latest, configured MCE and tried it.

    Still on MP for:

    1) TVServer and its ability to stream tv over many clients;
    2) Plugins, mainly MovingPictures and TVSeries;
    3) Skins

Don't flame me but I'm currently running W7MC. Had been a happy MP user for a while but got hold of W7 to give my HTPC a much needed OS refresh. Did that and installed MP only to find the remote control didn't work. Faffed around for a bit trying to get it to go but to no avail. Further inspection of the forums revealed that W7 isn't a supported platform. Rather than roll back to XP I've stuck with it to give W7 a go. My observations from my usage:

    Pros
    - TV. Very reliable. Series recording is pretty clever. Knows whether a recording has failed or not and will pick up a repeat if available. Also a doddle to set up. That's always been a downside to MP imo.
    - Video media: Out of the box is awful. But the MediaBrowser plugin gives me everything I need, including ISO support. Simple to use and install. Even deals with series very well.

    Cons
    - Playback navigation: Can only skip 30s at a time. So to skip through 20m of a partially watched video is a bit of a pain.
    - No native Last.fm integration. I know you could get it for XP MCE and it can be fiddled with to work but I'm pretty much done with fiddling.

We use our HTPC largely for single seat video playback so the above con is a proper pain for us. We miss the large skip steps and colour coding of watched items. For that reason, I'm waiting for W7 support from MP. Hurry up!! ;)

Hi NorthernJohn, I'm using MP 1.1.0 Beta with the last SVN (Jan, 08 2010) and all is working great. Also MCE remote... I too was worried about this issue, but I installed MP and SVN, and found that MCE remote was working great, with no action needed (ok, just tick "MCE remote" in config). Be sure to check "third party checks" in config, to disable MCE services.

Don't know if MP 1.0.2 works in Win7, I think no...
