Hi all hope the new year is treating you well.

I have decided to use an old PC to run media portal but I have a small issue as I cant install WMP 11 because my opperating system is Windows XP MCE 2004 and this wont accept WMP 11 (thanks for stiffig me again Bill!)
My question is can I 'get around' having WMP 11 and just vkep WMP 10?

Thanks Doely

You can install WMP11 on MCE2004, but it totally stuffs up mce running, as it runs on different code, if you do this, make sure you have a image file incase you wish to revert.

Unfortunately MS in their wisdom also put a tv directshow fix in WMP, which MP relies on, that's why it is a requirement.

if you use google, "WMP11 and mce2004", the second post found, links to how you can install (afterdawn.com).

Never knew that mce2004 cannot be updated, what a bummer.

    Check out this thread here.

It will enable u to run without wmp11, but u will still need to extract the setup files from the Deploy tool to get MP installed. I will be putting up a guide shortly, but basically u run the deploy tool, but don't next. Then use explorer to get to your user temp directory. Usually C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temp\MediaPortal Installation. There u will see a deploy folder which contains the actual setup files.
Then copy package-mediaportal.exe and package-tvengine.exe to somewhere else. Close the Mediaportal installer then you can run teh extracted files to setup.
If you are not intending to install the TVserver, SQL is not required and you can now simply run package-mediaportal.exe to get it installed.

After it is installed backup your mediaportal.exe file and replace it with the one in the other thread, and you will be able to check out Mediaportal without having to apply various updates.
