Yeah we have that idea logged in the issue tracker, so it is something we definitely plan on doing. Originally the plan was to implement this at the same time as the filtering and sorting system so they could be integrated but we decided to put off custom fields for a bit to get filtering out the door faster. It will definitely happen though, this is something I would use a lot myself as well.
