I was wondering how the zoom functionality works in terms of upscaling / downscaling.

The resolution of my screen is 1366x768 pixels (16:9), so if I play a 1080p video (with a resolution of 1920x1080p) it downscales to 1366x768 am I right? But now, if the same video has a 2.35:1 aspect ratio with black borders on the top and base of the image and I use the zoom functionalty to make the video fill the screen by cropping the left and right of the picture, will it still downscale from 1920x1080p or will it use the downscaled 1366x??? image and upscale it again to whatever resolution is required?

To clarify myself a bit using filter processes, what workflow does the zoom-plugin use?:
Step1. Original picture 1920x817 (2.35:1)
Step2. Downscale to 1366x581
Step3. Zoom from 1366x581 to 1366x786 (so upscale the downscaled picture, clipping left and right, losing quality in the process)

or does it go like this:
Step1. Original picture 1920x817 (2.35:1)
Step2. Zoom from to 1920x817 to 1366x768 (so immediately downscale the picture from the source, clipping left and right, not losing quality in the process)

Can anyone enlighten me :)?

As I understand, it will immediatly scale to the right size, without upscaling downscaled material. Scaling is (to my knowledge) achieved by setting the renderer to the approriate size.
