this is what Ifound in the first 10 minuits of upgrading to 1.0.1.0 (from 1.0.0.0)

upgrade did not update the version number (virtualstore related)
Did not keep the password, I though it was soposed to keep all my settings
Tried to ask if I wanted to start the server but covered the message with the full screen starting mediaportal thing
the installer insisted on installing DX9 even though the current and installed version is DX10
Full screen key did not work till I restarted (the instructions on the site do actualy recomend I restart anyway)
channel changing does not work, the only way to change channels is to specificly stop the old one first (now seemes to have fixed its self)
One channel reported no signal, trying again shows that the signal is in fact fine (old bug)
After restart MP does not start, just gets to initializing direct and sits there

most of these I have worked around/manualy fixed but the channel change and startup things are a serious problem. tell me what more you want to know.

installing DX9 even though the current and installed version is DX10

MP is DX9 application, so DX10 has nothing tp do with it. Also the installer is not installing DX itself, but only (updated) DLL files that MS keeps releasing quite often.

Did you ever resolve this? Ive just completely rebuilt HTPC from scratch and coming up against this also.

    Cheers

Could be that the application is generating packed gfx files. Check out the All Users\Application Data\Team Mediaportal\MediaPortal\Cache\Your Skin folder during the init screen. You might see it's (slowly) generating files there.

Having read other posts I found that various issues cause MP to stop loading at this point. For me it turned out to be the primary display settings which got changed when I rebuilt Vista. Not fully resolved yet, but working by juggling these.:)

I didn't see the problem with the previous version and I didn't change any display settings, so, although I can't completly rule it out I think it is unlikely display settings. I also only have one display if that makes any difference (as you mentioned "Primary" display)

I had the exact same problem. After upgrading to 1.0.1 and setting skin to B&W 1080 MP hung on the "Initializing DirectX" screen. It turned out that it didn't crash but was building packed gfx files. Since it was packing a few thousand images (skin images, folder.jpg's, etc) this took a while.

it sounds like that must be it then. whay do they get built, what are they for? is it related to being a new skin? did older versions do that and I just never saw it or is it new for it to take a very long time?
