1.0 RC3: Client can´t connect to server. (1 Viewer)

Hello,

i noticed a problem if i want to try to connect my Client to the Server.


Way to reproduce.
- I made a restrart of the TV-Server
- TV-Server is running. If I start Mediaportal local on it it works
- Now I start MediaPortal Configuration tool as an Adminstrator on my Client with a fresh installed MediaPortal
- I tell the client that it should use "htpc" as server
- Then It takes more than five ............ minutes before MediaPortal Configuration tool close
- I get an error in the configuration log:

Then I start Mediaportal
- On the Splash Screen it takes very long on "Loading window plugins"
- .....
- After about three Minutes. MediaPortal has started.
- I select MyTV
- You can wait seven minutes and nothing happens.
- I kill MediaPortal


I attached the logs of the Client.


With RC2 on client and server i didn´t have this problem.
The Firewall settings are the same as with RC2.

But one thing is much better than with RC2 the MediaPortal runs more smoother on the Server!

Can you e.g. ping the TV-server when using "ping htpc" in a command prompt?
Have you tried to use your TV-servers IP instead of "htpc"?

Yes, I can.
Ping and Remotedesktop works.

Yes, I have.
That does not make any difference.

Firewall

Hi,

did you try with the firewall (on server and client) disabled?

I once had the same problem; the SQL-server had created a new instance, and the exception in the firewall was still looking to the old instance, so the new one was blocked.

It was the firewall on the Server!
If I deactivate it ---> It works!
But I didn´t find out why?
TVServer is allowed
TCP/IP 1433 is allowed
UDP 1434 is allowed
like it is mentioned here: TV-Server/Configuration/Firewall - MediaPortal Wiki Documentation
Or can I find out which ports Mediaportal use in the LOG-Files.

What else can I do?
I don´t want to use my HTPC without a firewall.


But when I installed RC3 the Installer told me that the firewall configured automaticly. -----> Strange
I will try to reproduce this.

Maybe there is a bug in this tool: MEDIAPORTAL - free MediaCenter HTPC Software - BackupSettings -------> I hope not

Hi,

good to hear that its the firewall; but, I think you only looked to the firewall (exceptions) of MediaPortal. In my case it was the expception for the SQL server (and it looks like this is your problem also, see your first post "The database backend (provider SQLServer) could not be reached".

Just check if the exception in the firewall really looks to the right database; I think the installer has a problem if there is another database already and always looks to the first one. At least, this was the case when it did not work on my system. There is an existing database from another application (MSSQL.1), and the exception was created by the installer only for this one.

So I had to add the exception for the MSSQL.2 (which is the database for the TVserver) manually.

Since the firewall is disabled on both the client and the server for me, clearly it isn't a firewall issue.

The server was working when loaded with RC2 as was the client. Both are now loaded with RC3. The client takes for ever to close the configuration utility. Then Mediaportal itself takes a long time to load. My TV never actually loads when accessed from the home menu.

Ok, if you say, the firewalls are disabled, I have to believe you; the symptoms you describe, however, are exactly the ones with a blocking firewall (Mediaportal: Waiting while "loading window plugins", I think???). But: If you do not provide any information about your system and no logfiles at all, most likely nobody will be able to help you more specific.

:sorry:Feeling properly chastised and penitent here is the following. I can ping the server and rdp into the server just fine.
Both are core2 systems running 2GB ram and XP Pro SP2.

I have included the client log files.
