I am experiencing a 4+ minute delay when I first start Moving Pictures before I can play a movie. If I start a movie in that time period (while it is scanning local media sources) I get skipping and choppy playback. I am also experiencing playback issues intermittently when playing movies. Sometimes when I start a movie there is an extended delay before the movie will actually play. Several minutes, but other times it plays almost instantly. What is weird, is that it doesn't happen all of the time. I Have included 2 log files.

    MediaInfoWrapper.MediaInfoWrapper: DLL Version : MediaInfoLib - v0.7.36BETA

My guess is that this old version is giving u trouble.

Current Media Info DLL available is v0.7.52 and they have fixed a ton of problems.

Download 32-bit DLL from their SourceForce site and overwrite the one you got, see if that works.

Just open a folder put that in your address bar and go, now just drop the new dll there, should ask you replace or keep both, use replace, that's it.

This address is just in case you have a x64bit version of windows.

OK, I installed the new version, but I still experienced the delay when starting a movie. Once the movie was started once, the delay seemed to be gone. I have attached the log file.

You are using the ffdshow codec, which is known to cause delays on first time usage and minor delays on sequential usage.

Switch to the MPC-HC standalone codec v1.5.2.3456 or any other good one, and delay will be gone.

    OK,
I am not sure how to change that. Which codec do I need to change? Would it be the MPEG-2 Video decoder, or the H.264 Video decoder. That would need to be changed under the TV Codecs section correct? Currently I am using CyberLink Video Decoder (PDVD11) under both of those.

Also, how do I use that codec? I downloaded MPC - HC 32bit (x86) v1.5.2.3456 from sourceforge.net, but don't know how to install the codec or where. Sorry, I am an idiot when it comes to media software.
    Thanks in advance!!!!!!

    Hi :)

Did you download the installer or the zip/7z file? The installer should be easiest.
Another great option if MPC does not work is LAV.

No your TV one looks good, MovingPictures would be using the codecs from the "Videos" tab.

You need to use the MPC-HC Standalone codecs, as the MPC-HC program has the codecs internal, so you want the standalone ones so that MediaPortal can make use of them. Since MediaPortal is 32-bit, you need to use the 32-bit MPC-HC Standalone codec version as well.

Download the 7-zip file and extract them somewhere; I personally put them in "C:\Program Files (x86)\MPC-HC Standalone Filters". Then you have to register the codecs you want to use.

The bare essential is the "MPCVideoDec.ax" filter, as that one takes care of DivX, XviD, H.264 (with DXVA support), VC-1, etc. For audio you would want to go with "MpaDecFilter.ax" which takes care of the MP3, AC3, DTS, etc. To actually have your system determine which audio and video codec is required you also need to use a splitter. This brings us to "MatroskaSplitter.ax" (for MKV files), "FLVSplitter.ax" (for those OnlineVideos Flash videos), and "MP4Splitter.ax" (for Apple media).

Of course you can register them all, as there are a bunch more, but I tend to go with less is more on this, and only when a file refuses to play will I use the MPC-HC internal filters to check which one is needed to play a certain file and then register only that. This avoids the mess that codec pack bring me and keeps my system lean and mean.

To actually register you open up an elevated command prompt (right click and run as Administrator on the "Command Prompt" entry in your Accessories) and run the following commands (you can copy and paste them):

    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\MPC-HC Standalone Filters\MPCVideoDec.ax"
    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\MPC-HC Standalone Filters\MpaDecFilter.ax"
    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\MPC-HC Standalone Filters\MatroskaSplitter.ax"
    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\MPC-HC Standalone Filters\FLVSplitter.ax"
    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\MPC-HC Standalone Filters\MP4Splitter.ax"

Of course you might prefer other splitters, such as the Haali one (can be needed when it comes to dual+ track audio files (I'm forced to use it for the same reason), or the ffdshow-tryouts audio codec (with nusance of init delay as well, but much shorter then what you experience) for DTS-HD support, but it's easy to adapt to what you need.

For 99.9% of the users a pure MPC-HC standalone filter+codec setup will work and is the easiest way to ensure stable results. It also allows for a quick verification to see why a file doesn't play, due to the MPC-HC application with internal filters.

    Enjoy.

PS: Adjust paths by removing the (x86) part if you are on a 32-bit Windows edition.
