A Few Questions about MediaPortal (1 Viewer)

Hello,
I have a WinTV Nova T tv tuner, and i dont really like the winTV app. I came across MediaPortal, which looks very very cool. However I have some questions about it.

1) Does it run as a stand-alone application like WinTV
2) Does it start-up automatically
3) Is it like an OS?

No, requires XP\Vista, but people do have windows "Booting straight into Mediaportal" so no visible signs that it is a PC running things.
