About to rip DVD library - Need Advice! (2 Viewers)

Depending of the content of the DVD, I am ripping my DVDs into *.iso with the full content or only the main-movie.
DeamonTools integration works fine for me, and diskspace is still enough...

For processing i am using Slysoft-Software

I rip the main movie with only the best sound track using DVD Fab. I then pull the elementary streams out of the rip using PgcDemux. If the mpeg2 video has pulldown flags I try to remove them with eac3to. Most times it isn't possible because of combination of progressive and interlaced. I then create a chapter file using chapterxtractor. If the movie needs subtitles I find the best subtitle srt file on the internet.

I then mux them all back togethor using mkvmerge, video, audio, chapters, subtitles(if applicable). Remember to apply the audio delay if there is one. Pgcdemux will tell you what it is.

Well after playing around with a few tools, I have found that using Dvd Decrypter to rip and using Handbrake to encode only the main movie into XviD at 1500kbps using 2 passes gives good enough quality. The Matrix, for example, ends up being about 1.6 GBs.. which I can live with.

Encoding h.264 seems to take exponentially longer..

probably a silly question, but I don't get it why ripped movies appear letterboxed on my widescreen TV.

How do I get the output to be the full size of my display?

Do you have settings in Handbrake for video size (width x height)?
If the size is reduced during the re-encoding, you can try the stretch option in MP and see how it looks.

Another tool for the DVD rip part of the operation is RipIt4Me. This provides a wrapper plus a few extra tools around DVD Decrypter. It gives a 1-Click rip option.

If you want to Rip and Encode all in 1-step then Fairuse Wizard is an option.

Give autoGK a try and check autocrop using CTRL + F9 to access the hidden functions.

well it looks like it is taking the original source size at 720x480 and preserving it using the strict anamorphic setting. When this (default) option is set, the width and height text boxes are disabled.

Now my HTPC is connected to my TV @ 1152x648 resolution, so it makes sence that the video image doesn't take up all of the vertical space available.

So would I just resize the image to something higher than 648 (and keeping the 1.78 ratio) ??

Ok, so now I am kinda confused.

Movies that have a resolution of 624x352, or even 640x352 will take up the entire display of my TV. It seems that MP, or VLC, or whatever media player is playing these, will zoom/scale these videos so that it takes up the entire display of my TV.

But other videos will play letterboxed..

how do I figure out the proper size ??

Dr Tone, What you are describing here seems very complicated. Can you tell me what your desired end result is that makes you do all of this when you rip a DVD ? I am very curious.

I am a complete noob with MP and I plan to setup a new HTPC with MP in the coming weeks.

With that, I'm wondering why you all choose to rip and encode all of your DVD's rather than just copying the VOB files over to your machine and use AnyDVD to allow them to play?

Is the only reason because you want to reduce the size and save on hard drive space?

I want to use MP for a DVD carousel replacement only. My friend has MP working and just copies the VOB files over to his computer and he's done. Much more simple, quicker and no loss of quality.

Am I missing something?
