About to rip DVD library - Need Advice! (1 Viewer)

if you are not using MP for playback and record of live TV you would be better off using something like XBMC as a dvd carousel replacement.

I think it was explained pretty clearly early in the thread that the advantage of (and therefor the reason for using re-encoding) is to save on hard disk space.

I re-encode my dvds to reduce size and to get rid of everything except my soundtrack and subtitle.
I also think, ripping to x264 using colour correction actually improves the quality of the movie, but that's just me.

I suppose with the price of tera drives, size isn't that much of an issue.

Well I have decided to encode them.

I couldn't see the difference between x264 and XviD, and XviD was quicker to encode, so I chose that. Now I am just trying to figure out the best size to rip them at so during playback it'll take up the entire screen. (see previous posts in this thread on the problems I am having)

regarding the letterboxing, is the aspect ratio correct (are the vids stretched?)

Also, have you tried using MP's zoom mode to change the playback aspect ratio ?

(Do you have the allowed zoom modes allowed in settings -> videos?)

That's my thinking as well. Hard drive space is cheap and I want the least amount of hassle. Rip and watch sounds good to me.

A friend of mine has both MP and XBMC and prefers MP. Unless I'm not understanding it correctly, XBMC uses software decoding rather than hardware which requires very steep system requirements if playing blu-ray.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Dr Tone, What you are describing here seems very complicated. Can you tell me what your desired end result is that makes you do all of this when you rip a DVD ? I am very curious.

I want the best quality, single file with chapter support. Single vob doesn't give me chapter support.

Is there a way I can load a video file that plays perfectly for my TV (full wide screen), into a media player and find out the properties (resolution / aspect ratio, etc) of it. Then I can ensure my DVD rips that I make use those exact properties?

Will VLC tell me that info?
