I downloaded 32 MB of latest media portal version, and when I went to install, it says it has to download many more software, or it will not install.

Why waste users bandwidths, time and efforts in giving such a huge package that is just a junk. I have many software already installed and working in my pc but it still goes ahead to install them. Does it know what it is doing?

Is it a joke, and if it is, it is a sick one.

I am highly disappointed with your sledgehammer strategy even before trying it even once.

May God give you common sense and ethics.

For correct functioning of MediaPortal some additional libraries are needed, e.g. .NET framework, latest DirectX components etc. And the size for MP itself is with 32 MB very small compared to other applications of this kind.
And last but not least - your manner to express your impression is - sorry to say - sick as well. Closing my comment with your own words:

The MP installer is included in the 32Mb. If your machine doesn't have the prerequisites for installation then MP will download and install them for you. These cannot be bundled with the main installer I believe.

Eh... Like most apps, there are some kind of requirements for MP to work (both software and HW). Like most good software, MP will help you fulfill these (if not already fulfilled) by downloading what is missing (isn't that nice?), so you don't have to waste time finding and downloading it yourself.

Why waste users bandwidths

If these were "bundled" w/download, then we would waste you BW, as normally some stuff is already installed.

Makes me wonder if you ever installed anything before.....

Now, that only some of you had replied politely while others of you have concluded that user is wrong and you are right, have a look at the following status:

My O.S.: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1 Build 7600)

1. I have directX 11 installed and working.

It still needed directX 9c march 2009, and it went ahead to download directx_mar2009_redist.exe from a site

Q: Why would it download an older version when newer version is there?

2. I had MS Visual C++ 2005 redistributable, 8.0.59193 installed and working. I think pidgin had installed that. Not sure

When I ran install, it said MS Visual C++ 2008 SP1 redist (KB973552) installed, but when I wen to "only download, don't install" it still went ahead installing the above that it had said "installed" previous time.

Q: Why would it download something that it says installed?

3. I have windows media player 12.0.7600.16385 installed and working

It still says wmp11 is not downloaded so asks to download it.

then it said I have to install it manually, and when I click next, it kept on asking me where I had kept the downloaded file of wmp11, and wudn't proceed without that file.

The download link it gives for wmp11 has no download link of wmp11 for windows 7. So I just can't download it and can't proceed with installation of your software even when a more later wmp12 is kicking on my box.

It installed the downloaded files in "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\MediaPortal Installation\deploy". It should have asked me the download location so that I can save those files and use them in future, otherwise it would have downloaded them everytime I format and reinstall my os.

I don't have sql so its going ahead to download them is ok.

The normal trend is to show the current installed version of the software, if it is installed, and show the version that your software needs. That clarifies in a jiffy to the user why a newer version is needed to be downloaded and installed. Your software doesn't show the existing installed working versions, and forces me to download older versions. What logic is in that?

Also, after unzipping its files,

- if I cancel a download, the software just aborts.
- if I am not able to download wmp11, the software just aborts.

I don't know whether it cleans the unzipped files, because the way it closes in a milli second, I don't think it had time to clean its traces and leftovers. I think you will be better able to explain why at all it is terminating instead of going ahead with whatever got installed, installing that and installing the basic package and whether it is removing the unzipped unused files?

As I said, no it didn't remove the unzipped files.

In the folder, C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\MediaPortal Installation

It did leave some 128 MB size of 55 files in 29 folders.

It saves the downloaded files in TEMP directory? that any cleaning software will first clean, and in the next installation, it wouldn't find those files and will have to download again.

Fourth update:

I ran its downloaded vc2008 package, and my control panel is showing that installed.

I ran its directx 2009, though my dxdiag is still showing directx11.

When I ran mediaportal installer again after installing the above, It still says the above two are "NOT DOWNLOADED" and asks me to "Download" them, and when I asks it to go ahead, it again goes to download them.

some of you had commented whether I have installed any software at all till now. Hope now you have the idea whether I have installed the software or not, and you realize that the above is a mess of your particular software that will blow the fuse of any sensible person.

Hope you will take this all elaborate feedback in right spirit and would amend your software accordingly. Giving a free software isn't an excuse for shabby working.

DirectX and directX redistributable arent same thing. Redistributable is set of DLL files that applications are build against. DirectX is something that those DLLs itself use (and the DirectX11 "contains" DirectX 9 as well).

There is nothign wrong when MP asks you to have the DirectX redistributable DLL files to be installed.

Sounds like a bug if it installed when you selected it not to be installed. But in any case it will be required since C++ code is linked on build time against the specific C++ DLLs from Microsoft.

This is most likely a bug in the installer that it requires WMP11 to be installed. It was required on XP to be able to use DVB specific patch (this cleverity comes from Microsoft itself).

In any case 66% of that ranting was pure ignorance and the 3rd one is bug I would say.

I think now I can agree that it was not malice.

It is obvious that no developer had ever installed MP on Windows 7 otherwise the software itself would have presented so many problems that it presented to me. Still, they unabashedly declare that the software is windows 7 compatible.

I present them full list of problems that I am facing but they are more into finding fault in the feedback than in solving it.

They use older versions of software and fail to recognize and use newer versions of software that are installed and working on the system.

Their own wmp link says there is no wmp their version download for windows, yet their software waits for it and wouldn't proceed without it.

they save downloaded files in Temp folder. Sheer stupidity. Any cleaning software will delete that and they will download that again wasting users time and bandwidth. And once a software download is available in their that temp directory, the software doesn't recognize it, and goes ahead downloading it again.

their software abort on any problem, and they leave many many MBs of folders and files uncleaned junk on the harddisk.

Such mismanagement earns bad name for free software.

Anyway. I have already wasted enough time, it's time to move on.
