I use a Hauppage PVR150 for archiving off my Sky+ stb. Currently I'm using the High quality settings but I got thinking about whether it is actually worth the extra disc space as it is coming through an s-video (ie analog) connection.

My question is, will I see any noticeable difference by dropping down to medium quality? Is recording at High quality only worthwhile if I had a digital signal?

Cheers
John

    Hi,

hmm, personally I would lower the Bitrate. Perhaps not to medium. But I think something around 6000 KBit/s will give sufficent results with less space.

I'm using the PVR-150 as well and I'm not satisfied with picture quality at Medium or High Quality settings; I don't see much of a difference there.
Of course both settings are way better than VHS and that's enough most of the time, but if I want to record something really important I don't want to lose any quality. What do you think, how many KBits per second do I need for a nearly-lossless recording quality?

    Hi,

well. Consider that eg. DVDs highest bitrate is defined as 9800 kbps. IMHO you won't get better results with bitrates higher than that. Also you will only be able to burn standardized DVDs with this as highest bitrate.

"Highest" (12000) setting of MP already exceeds this value. But I do not see the sense of using such a high bitrate. Most of the times the original signal is already too bad. An analog / PAL signal afaik has information round about ~5000 kpbs (MPEG2).
