ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 MP-tauglich? (1 Viewer)

Hello folks,

I have found a rel. cheap PC (AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual-Core, 2 GB RAM, Onboard ATI Radeon Xpress 1250) that has this Graphic card:

What do you mean, is this a card suitable for MediaPortal?

I'd like to watch TV in as good a quality as I have it watching with my external stand-alone receiver
(Philips DSR9005 HDTV)

My TV LCD has a Matrix of 1920x1080
I only watch standard definition programes!
So my TV-card is Hauppauge WinTV Nova S-USB2


My first tests have shown, that the quality is poor and I have stopper from time to time.
However, I tested the system with windows xp (freshly installed) and not with MediaPortal, since I haven't got it yet.

Will I be able to get better quality with MediaPortal?

the Picture Qaulity from my point of view is good. The X1250 does siffer from an issue with the FLIPY command within MP, but is not a fault of MP. Skins are available to rectify the lock ups . Read this thread for more details ATI 690G/x1250 problems - MediaPortal Forum.

I use ffdshow (Available Free) as the codec but I do not do anything on H264 encoding. All runs fine based on MT System Specs. Read the post for others issues. Basically, if you buy this chipset, focus on VIsta otherwise modified skins are required. Again the HD cinntent I watch is MPG2 due australian specs so all is OK and looks good from my opinion. Others will argue though.......

I didn't run 1920*1080 uptil now, but it is ok for 720p.

However, does nobody know, whether this DVB-S-Box is good enough for looking sd-television on a full hd panel?

And whether my slimline should be good enough?

I found some time to dig a little bit deeper. This is just theory though, because I do not have a 1920x1080 LCD to test things out

The data provide by AMD look quite promising:

AMD 690 Series Specifications

They claim to have mpeg2 decoding hardware acceleration and mpeg-4 decoding *support*, whatever that means.

There is an interesting review about the AMD690/ATI Xpress 1250 here:

But the section about HDTV looks less promising:

We used Blu-ray versions of Superman and Flyboys to check out Blu-ray playback performance. However, the ASUS M2NPV-VM couldn't play back Blu-ray content over a digital connection, probably because its DVI port doesn't support HDCP content protection. The MSI board could play back Blu-ray content, but there are some caveats. At 720P, things looked reasonably good, but there was fairly serious stuttering at 1080p.

We chose not to do in-depth image-quality analysis at this point, preferring to wait for shipping drivers.

So while either of these boards can probably handle DVD playback just fine—with ATI likely doing better in the image quality department—full 1080p playback may be best left to discrete graphics cards

The article seems to be from early 2007. So AMD/ATI may have updated the drivers but it may be better to go for a full HDTV capable graphics card.

i would wait for mainboards with the AMD 780G Chipset . it should have a better hardwareacceleration. with 690g you can not play BR without stuttering. or you can use a pci-e graphic card like a ati radeon 3450.

ich antworte mal auf deutsch?!

hatte/hab auch nen htpc mit x1250 onboardgrafik.

die bildqualität ist wie bei jeder anderen grafikkarte auch. sdtv wird flüssig verarbeitet und ausgegeben.
hdtv kannste aber mit der kiste vergessen, der prozessor muss die ganze arbeit übernehmen und ist überfordert.
hab mir desshalb ne hd2600xt geholt welche mit hilfe von power dvd die hdtv ausgabe beschleunigt.

normales tv läuft im zusammenspiel mit mp aber sehr gut.

thx for your reply.

What I'm wondering is:

If I plug in usb memory stick into my LCD-TV and play a mpeg2 video from it, the qualita of the movie is very good.
We all know, mpeg2 means 720x576 pixel. My Telly seems to upscale this format to 1920x1080. No shuttering!
This works via usb2, as I said.

If I use my DVB-S box and adjust the dvb software to an output resolution of 768x576 (what is the original TV broadcasting resolution) and give this via HDMI-cable to my Telly, It should have the same quality. But it isn't!

I have a shuttering from time to time and the picture isn't as sharp as using the stand alone receiver (Philips DSR9005 HDTV)!

1. mpeg2 does not mean 720x576 (svcd is also mpg2, there are hddvds with mpg2 coding as examples)
2. the x1250 does not support 1080p (as far as I know, I use one), only 1080i. 1080p would be much better
3. stuttering: did you set refresh rate of GFX to 50 Hz? If not, do it!
4. stuttering: try different mpg2 codecs (mpv or dscaler, the ATi Avivo codec stutters for me also), with "bob" deinterlacing
4. try ffdshow postprocessing to get a sharper picture like here: Postprocessing - MediaPortal Wiki Documentation
5. I would consider to buy a new MoBo with 780G chipset (like this: Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H, 780G (dual PC2-8500U DDR2) Preisvergleich bei Geizhals.at Deutschland); it has a MUCH better graphic unit, which support 1080p and h.264 acceleration

it sounds wonderful. when the mainboards are cheaper as now i will buy a mainboard with the 780g chipset!
