Audio renderer question (1 Viewer)

I just set up Mediaportal 1.2.3 and it is working well, however I have several choices for audio renderer and they kind of seem redundant. I am using my MoBo's HDMI output for audio and video so I have selected the AMD HDMI Output which works. Can you tell me what the difference is between the Direct Sound: AMD HDMI Output and the AMD HDMI Output? I might in the future need the Optical output depending on if I get an amp to support 5.1 (now I just have 2.1 through a sound bar and supplemental base speaker)

They're most likely the same. You can find the renderers in you windows configuration settings for Sound.
I use the 'default DirectSound device' settings, which then takes the settings from Windows.
