Hi guys,

I'm considering getting this card to use with MediaPortal. Both this thread and the similarly named one (without the TAKE TWO!) kind of ended without any definitive resolution. What's the story with this card, for those of you who are using it? Should I go for it? The only real other alternative I'm thinking about is the DigitalNow dual PCI-e jobby. What's the pros and cons either way from users of either or both cards?

Actually, I've just had a quick peak on DigitalNow's site (while writing this reply) and they're showing their cards out of stock until AUGUST 2008! I've got to get my HTPC puppy up and running before the Olympics, so 08/08 is going to be TOO LATE!

I guess it's got to be the A177 - so please let me know your experiences of this card with MP.

Thanks guys!
Cheers,
Craig

Hi craigparris1

I can give my experiance with both cards .

I found the avermedia card does work but was unreliable and dont bother with there supplied software under Vista.
The digitalnow card i am using like many others does work well. I have set up mine and 2 friends machines with it and works the same on all.
I have set it up under XP and Vista and is the same..

Well where do I start with my "experience" with TV tuner cards....

I ordered the A177 Avermedia card when I built my HTPC. The card doesn't come with BDA drivers so doesn't work with most software out there. I had a heap of issues with getting it to work in media portal and in the TV server and then I had issues with the TV card causing slow load times for other software (winamp when watching video files).

I yanked that card and ordered a DNTV live dual hybrid from DigitalNow which was sold out and I had to wait over a month.

When I finally got the DNTV live card I could only get one of the 2 on-board digital tuners working

I spent 2 weeks trying to get it all working in Media Portal and other software with no sucess. I sent back the card with the beliefe that it was faulty and they sent out another card..... THAT WORKS

I have had a number of other issues with blue screens, codecs and what not but the DNTV Live card was way easier (once I had a working one) to get going in media portal. I really would advise against the Avermedia card. It seems to be a hard one to get working but you may be lucky.

BTW, I have both digital tuners, analogue tuner and FM radio working in Media Portal TV Server RC1 and now I know what I am doing, it only takes about 30 minutes to install MP and setup my cards. The support for the DNTV card was quick to respond, but not very helpful. When I had the faulty card they said things like "your signal isn't strong enough" or "you need to re-flash your bios" etc. The other thing is they don't ever seem to have enough stocks of these cards. They always seem sold out. They did swap the card out though and that only took 3 days through mail so that is a plus...

Value for money though, the card is spot on for a dual hybrid card with FM radio.... Everything I need in a card AND you can even save a bob if you choose not to buy the software for the card which is great if you plan on using MP or similar.

Hello

Where did you find capturecarddefinitions.xml file, I have prolink BX2500 and I am trying to import my data from graphEdit and cant find that file.
Can you write detailed instructions how to import and what to do next after import, you are my only hope ...

Thanks in advanced (sorry for my bad english)

Yes - I added this to the capturecarddefinitions.xml file. I can get it to work but there are problems which may be related to the name for both tuners being the same in graphedit. Still trying to sort it out.

I have tried the Avermedia A177 and here are my results. In Mediaportal I can only get one tuner to work, and I don't believe that it is possible to get both working due to the way the driver is written. I tried TV server in Mediaportal 1.0 RC1 and it picked up both tuners with no problems. I wasn't happy with TV server for a number of reasons and reverted to Mediaportal 0.2.3 as this is my main media box (have to keep the family happy!). I would like time to look at TV server again and see if it works better in the first stable release. It has a lot of nice features I would like to have.
