AVForums HTPC Software Comparison Thread (1 Viewer)

Hi,

Some of you may know, that I have started a thread on the AVForums HTPC forum with the aim to generate a sticky which will compare all the different HTPC software. I have agreement from the moderators and things are going quite well.

So far I have got a good amount of detail and I have to say, it really puts MediaPortal in a very good light - no other software so far is showing up so much green on the screen! The hope is, that the comparison sticky will be a one stop shop for newcomers to the HTPC game (or existing users thinking of changing). The fact that MediaPortal shows up so feature rich in comparison to others will no-doubt mean that it generates a great deal of interest for MediaPortal.

Anyway, if anyone wants to get involved, by either helping putting the information together, or by suggesting other deal-breaking capabilities to put in the list, then please let me know (either on this thread or via AVForums). I know there are lots of features that I don't use that others love, so it would be great to get the list as comprehensive as possible.

BTW, can't find any working skype plugin for xbmc.

I suppose, one of the problems will always be trusting the data input by others, I might split it out to Skype messaging and Skype video and see if they both get a "Yes"

Regarding BR playback: Can XBMC watch encrypted BR's w/o software like AnyDVD?

Regarding: Encrypted TV: "Yes - Not Supported By MP". Not sure I got that one.... MP supports watching encrypted TV by using a smartcard and a CI.

I don't know about XBMC and blueray, but I will look into it (someone else is filling in the XBMC bit for me).

I have fixed the encrypted TV bit.

Regarding the 10ft setup, I was helping Deda to test his work, setting up folders is a cinch, including scanning afterwards, so MP1.3 will be a huge leap forward in my opinion for users, cannot wait to see users reactions to this

I feel somewhat flattered that people think this will be good enough to be copied into wikipedia, but with the help of others, the spreadsheet is really coming together nicely.

I am planning on putting a summary of each bit of software together on the sticky to give a top level overview. I currently have the MP homepage features, but much of the words are not needed (since if it didn't play videos then it wouldn't be in the sticky in any case). So I will probably canvas opinion on my chosen summary on this thread before I upload it onto AVForums.

Also, there will be a screenshot post for each bit of software, so please let me know your favourite screenshots and I will link to them (I presume there is no problem linking the AVForum post to embedded images on the MediaPortal website?). Finally, is the homepage video available on youtube? If so, I will put a link to that on that page too. EDIT: I found the link to the video.
