Synopsis::

My MediaPortal install has been working great... until today. In an effort to get some unrecognized AVIs to play, I installed a bunch of codecs; now MP crashes whenever I try to play an AVI.

The same AVIs will all play fine in WMP, though. DVDs and DVD images still work in MP.

I've tried uninstalling all of the codecs, but the problem persists.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA.

Try a different coded in MP. Try dscaler. Works for everything i can throw at it :)

Not sure if latest release of MP has it int he install. I have it either way. Not sure latest version as i have no idea wherei got it :)

But it works.

It plays 720p and 1080i High Definition video files so its good.

Hope i can help.

    Hi,

DScaler has nothing to do with AVI playback.

Do not ever install codec packs. Most of the time they only screw up your system and are very bad to uninstall. :(

I personally use ffdshow for playback of AVIs. I haven't found any AVI yet that did not work with it. Best thing, it is only one filter, and not a bunch of different things which kill themselfs.

What to do now? Hopefully you have a system restoration point.
There are some tools to get codecs out of the system, but unfortunatly the best way is to make a clean install of windows. :?

    Hi,

the choose of this codec only effects MPEG playback like:
    - TV
    - DVD
    - MPEG-videos
So its right to choose a different codec, if you have problems with one of those sections, but it has no effect on AVI playback.

For AVIs (XviD, DivX, etc) windows choose the "right" codec automatically.

I played around with it some more, and found that changing the video codec to dscaler, then back to cyberlink, fixed the problem. Very odd.

The Windows System Restore was a huge letdown; When I went to look for a restore point from before I installed the codecs, I discovered that there were NO restore points saved! I never messed with any of the settings for it, and by default it should have been checkpointing every time I installed new drivers, but it failed. Plenty of drive space left, too. Lame.

Ah, well, everything's working now! Thanks for the help!
