I like 1 better, the skin is called Backdrop for a reason. But if it is possible to just make the middle one as big as in example #2 it would be perfect.

i agree with emphatic, smaller albums and overlay would be best. The skin is indeed called backdrop and most of it should be visible.
Now you get best of both worlds!
